It seems that scanner manufacturers who produce the scanners for the retail market have decided to optimize their scanners and supporting software for scanning color photographs and/or internet type graphics. This decision has made these scanners pretty much useless for document storage and archiving.
Document storage scanning requires that the scanner's software (the TWAIN driver) be configurable to store the documents as a black & white files as opposed to a color files. Full color files are ten to fifty times larger than the black & white files and rapidly consume precious hard disk storage space. In addition, the scanning process for color takes 4-5 times longer than black & white.
Also, most of these scanners can not handle the volume of paper most insurance agents need to scan. The bottom line is that the scanners readily available in retail stores just don't do the job the way our customers want it done.
